Donovan Mitchell Trade Fallout (NBA): September 4, 2022

By Lior Lampert

The NBA offseason has been filled with movement, drama and rumors, and the Utah Jazz have been at the center of it all. First, they traded their All-Star and All-Defensive center in Rudy Gobert. Then, they traded their 3-and-D forward, Royce O’Neale to the Brooklyn Nets. Now, the Jazz traded their franchise player and 3-time All-Star Donovan Mitchell to the Cleveland Cavaliers. Mitchell was widely expected to be traded to the New York Knicks, as it was believed that no other team had the combination of draft capital and young talent the Knicks had to make a competitive enough offer to compare to the Knicks package. With that being said, let’s evaluate the aftermath of this trade for each of the three teams (Cavaliers, Jazz and Knicks).

With the Jazz transitioning to a full rebuild, it is safe to say that they are not done wheeling and dealing the veteran players on their roster. They have multiple other veteran players with tradeable contracts who can make positive contributions to championship-contending teams. Players such as Mike Conley, Jordan Clarkson, Bojan Bogdanovic and Malik Beasley will all have their names mentioned in trade rumors if they haven’t already. The Jazz now have a remarkable 14 first-round picks through 2029 and should only see that number increase once they trade the aforementioned players. This team is going nowhere quickly and should be one of the worst teams in the league this season. Utah has only one of their 82 games this season scheduled to be nationally televised (versus the Knicks).

Just one week ago, the Cavaliers were +10000 to win the 2022-23 NBA Finals at BetMGM. After acquiring Mitchell, they are now priced at +3000. Cleveland now boasts one of the best backcourts and starting lineups in the NBA: Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Caris LeVert/Isaac Okoro, Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen. Not to mention, they still have Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and one of Okoro/LeVert to come off the bench. The foundation of this team (Garland, Mitchell, Mobley and Allen) is now in place and they’re all 25 years of age or younger. They’re built to compete both immediately and for the foreseeable future as long as this core remains healthy and intact. I truly believe Cleveland has the firepower to compete with the best teams in the Eastern Conference as soon as this season and that they should win 50+ games this season.

The New York Knicks, albeit weren’t involved in the deal, most definitely were impacted by this move. They expected to land Mitchell, but now have to adjust their plans accordingly. The Knicks were reluctant to give the Jazz their desired haul of several unprotected first-round picks in addition to their young players (RJ Barrett, Quentin Grimes, Obi Toppin, Cam Reddish and Immanuel Quickley). The Knicks didn’t want to trade Grimes, Quickley, Reddish and Toppin yet they’re all currently stuck with limited minutes off the bench. New York has expressed confidence in their youth and now they need to give them the opportunity to prove their worth. They must embrace the youth movement and use those draft picks they coveted so much in Mitchell talks to move off of veteran contracts such as Evan Fournier and Julius Randle.
