NFL Fantasy Football Preview: WRs - August 11

By Lior Lampert

For the purpose of this writing, we will be using FantasyPros 2022 PPR wide receiver rankings. With that being said, there are always diamonds in the rough when it comes to mid-to-late round receivers. There have also been plenty of receivers who did not receive the workload and opportunity for fantasy success that their draft price commanded, also known as busts. Let’s take a look at a couple of those potential diamonds in the rough as well as a couple of potential busts at the receiver position for this upcoming fantasy football season.

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Diontae Johnson has been an absolute PPR-machine in Big Ben Roethlisberger’s twilight seasons. Last year, Johnson was a Pro Bowler who eclipsed the 100-reception mark while gaining 1,161 yards and scoring eight touchdowns in the process. The biggest difference for him this season: the uncertainty at the quarterback position. Johnson will either have a rookie quarterback in first-round pick Kenny Pickett or an underwhelming veteran option in Mitchell Trubisky. Not to mention, the Steelers have one of the worst offensive lines in football. Stay away from Johnson at his current overall WR15 draft price.

Another player whose price is a little too rich for my taste is Chicago Bears WR, Darnell Mooney. Mooney has been affected by some shaky quarterback play (to say the least) in his first two seasons and that should not be expected to change with Justin Fields still experiencing some growing pains. Sure, he may be the unquestioned number one receiver with the departure of Allen Robinson, but the lack of weapons alongside him paired with the inevitable erratic play of Justin Fields is a recipe for disaster. This Bears team is also headed nowhere fast and it is shocking to see him ranked as the WR25, ahead of the two players I am going to touch on next.

The Baltimore Ravens lost three of their four top wide receivers from last year: Marquise Brown, Sammy Watkins and Miles Boykin. They have not made any effort to replace these players and as a result there is a large amount of opportunity for the taking. Those three players accounted for 196 targets last season and those are now up for grabs. With little-to-no competition outside of superstar Tight End, Mark Andrews, I expect Rashod Bateman to take a large piece of that pie. Bateman is a very talented player who was highly-touted coming out of college and showed exactly why during his rookie season once he got healthy. Being ranked as the WR27, I think Bateman has a real chance to finish the season as a top-15 WR.

Coming off a torn ACL in Week 15 of last season, Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Chris Godwin is being extremely undervalued. Although he will likely not be 100% come Week 1, those who are patient could be compensated with quite the reward. Since 2019, Godwin has been one of the most productive receivers in the league when he is on the field. In 2019, he was fantasy football’s overall WR2. His ability to dominate all areas of the field paired with his connection with Tom Brady cannot be taken for granted. Being ranked as the WR28, he has league-winning upside and should continue to climb the rankings board.
