NFL Preview: NFC West Breakdown – August 20, 2022

By Michael Spiegel

Today’s article will focus on what the NFC West will look like for this season. The only division to host 3 playoff teams, the NFC West division winner, LA Rams, went on to win the Super Bowl last year. Will the reigning champs be able to defend their title, or will someone else steal their crown?

NFC West Preview

  1. Seattle Seahawks (+2200 to win NFC West @PointsBet)

I can’t think of a single person who has confidence in Drew Lock to carry this team to the playoffs, let alone a division title. The Seahawks have some work to do until they get back into contention and the odds dictate that. They didn’t put up horrendous numbers last year on either side of the ball, however, without Russell Wilson manning the offence for the first time in a decade, things will look a lot different for them. After putting up seven wins last season, I don’t know if they’ll be able to replicate that feat. The over/under on wins for the Seahawks sit at 5.5 for this season and I don’t think they’ll reach that total. I’m expecting the Seahawks to finish last in the division and possibly be one of the worst teams in football.

  1. Arizona Cardinals (+400 to win NFC West @BetRivers)

After going 7-0 to start the 2021 NFL Season, the Cardinals lost 4 of their last 5 games of the season to finish 11-6. The Cardinals then proceeded to get blown out by the eventual Super Bowl Champs, LA Rams, in the Wild Card game. As a new season gets underway expectations aren’t as high on the Cardinals as they won’t have DeAndre Hopkins for the first six games. Kyler Murray’s job will be difficult to live up to the start of the season that they had last year where they looked to be unstoppable. The Cards looked good on both sides of the ball last year, however, that end-of-the-season slump doesn’t instil great confidence in their fanbase or the oddsmakers. The Cards are sitting at over/under 8.5 wins, and I don’t think they’ll get to that total this year. The Cardinals find themselves with an opportunity this season to prove that they are contenders or fold and return to their woes of the past half-decade.

  1. Los Angeles Rams (+130 to win NFC West @DraftKings)

The reigning Super Bowl Champs currently have the best odds to win the NFC West, however, I don’t think they’ll win the division again. There’s no doubt in my mind that the Rams will make the playoffs again, however, I think they might regress a little bit. The Rams lost Sony Michel and (more importantly) Von Miller. Michel was their leading rusher this past season, however, they should be able to find a replacement for him; Miller on the other hand will be more difficult to replace. The Rams' offence was very good last year but their defence wasn’t great. Losing a big piece like Miller could come back to bite them but we’ll have to see just how resilient the Rams are at defending their Super Bowl title. Currently, at 10.5 over/under for wins, I think it’s a pretty safe bet to assume the Rams will clear this without a problem.

  1. San Francisco 49ers (+170 to win NFC West @SportsInteraction)

On paper, I think the 49ers are the best team in the NFC West and that’s why I think they’ll win the division this year. With all signals pointing to Trey Lance breaking out this year as the backbone of the 49ers offence, I think they’ll perform even better than they did last year. The 2021 season was by no means a disappointment for the 49ers. After a 10-win season that saw them secure a wild-card berth, the Cardinals managed to claw their way through to the Conference Championship where they barely fell short to the eventual Super Bowl Champions. This year the Niners are sitting at a flat over/under of 10 wins and I think they’ll surpass that total with ease. With an extremely impressive defence and an offence that is on the upswing, I think the Niners are being overlooked this year and they could be the team to win it all.
