2022 NFL Comeback Player of the Year Preview: July 25

By Rally Kapz

While you don’t necessarily need to lead your team to a Super Bowl appearance in order to win the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year award, it doesn’t hurt either.  That’s exactly what last year’s winner, QB Joe Burrow did.  Burrow returned from an ACL and MCL tear to lead the Cincinnati Bengals to their first Super Bowl appearance since the 1988-89 season.

So, Joe Burrow won the award, receiving 28 votes, outpacing the 21 votes received by runner-up Dak Prescott.  Both are quarterbacks.  Hmmm.  In fact, this award has gone to quarterbacks in each of the last four years, with the previous winners being Alex Smith, Ryan Tannehill and Andrew Luck.  The fact is, the highest profile position usually garners the most attention.  So, who are this year’s QB candidates for Comeback POY?

Jameis Winston (+550 at DraftKings Sportsbook):

Jameis Winston returns as signal caller for the Saints this season.  To be in contention, he will need a healthy Michael Thomas (also a Comeback POY candidate at +800 at Draftkings) pulling in passes, and show that he can gel under Saints’ new head coach Dennis Allen.

Other potential QB’s on this list include:

Daniel Jones of the Giants (+800 Draftkings) and Panthers new QB, Baker Mayfield (+1200 Draftkings).  And let’s not forget Deshaun Watson (+1200 Draftkings) now of the Cleveland Browns.  Watson’s talent is undeniable but given his continuing off-field challenges, buyer beware on this one.

There are also some interesting candidates in the backfield.  Returning to the Carolina Panthers lineup will be Christian McCaffrey (+750 Draftkings).  When healthy, McCaffrey is a dynamic offensive weapon, both on the ground and through the air.  He will most likely be working with a new starting quarterback in Baker Mayfield, so expect him to get his share of the ball.  The Panthers’ ability to keep him healthy will be key but if he plays the full season, he’s a solid contender to win this award.  However, the favourite to take the award is Derrick Henry (+400 Draftkings) of the Tennessee Titans.  Henry is a workhorse and when healthy can challenge for 2,000 rushing yards.  An already good Titans team is that much better with the return of Henry, and improvements made to the offensive line should give Henry every chance to succeed this season.
