NFL Week 2 Picks

By Mitchell Blair

So I just want to make sure I have this right.  Aaron Rodgers, Joe Burrow, Russell Wilson and Matthew Stafford didn’t get wins in their teams’ first game of the year, but Geno Smith, Daniel Jones and Mitch Trubisky did.  The Seattle Seahawks are atop their division and we have already had one tie.  Week 1 of the NFL season had its usual twists and turns and a lot of unexpected results.  Here is a look at some Week 2 games.

Two quarterbacks that did win their first game of the year were Justin Herbert and Patrick Mahomes.  Both, especially Mahomes, were on fire in Week 1 and while both won their first game, they won’t both win their second as we get an AFC West battle that should be a lot of fun.

So much for that notion that Kansas City would have a much different offense this season without Tyreek Hill.  That offense might actually be better if Week 1 against Arizona was any indication.  All Kansas City did was maybe get better.  They had 33 first downs and almost 500 yards in the 44-21 beatdown of the Cardinals.  Mahomes threw for 360 yards and five touchdowns making him the sixth player in NFL history to throw five touchdowns on six or more occasions.  While many have anointed Josh Allen as the MVP this year, Mahomes sent a message that he needs to be included in that MVP conversation.

I’m not really sure how you are supposed to stop the Kansas City offense and the job to do that is a lot tougher on a short week.

Justin Herbert should be able to keep up with Mahomes for a while, but I just don’t see the Chargers walking into Arrowhead and plucking off the Chiefs.  I don’t see Mahomes going off the way he did in Week 1, but I do see Kansas City winning this game and covering.

PICK: KC -4 (-109) at Coolbet

It is only Thursday and a lot can change from Thursday to kickoff, but here are some early picks to look at as well.

Washington at Detroit:  The Lions are favored to win a game for the first time since November of 2020. The last time they were favored to win a game, they were blasted 20-0 by Carolina. Can they get the win this time?  They’re home to a Washington team I am not sold on. How can anyone be sold on Carson Wentz? They may have beaten Jacksonville to start the season, but I’m not leaning on the Commanders anytime soon.

PICK: Det -1.5 (-107) at Sports Interaction

Chicago at Green Bay:  The Packers lost their opener, the Bears won their opener and yet Green Bay is a 10 point favorite to win the Sunday night game at home. Is that right?  It is to me.  The Packers struggled in last year’s opener and you know what they did from there.  Green Bay’s young receivers needed a week to play a game and learn some things.  I don’t know what you could have taken away from the Bears considering they played in a monsoon.  I’ve got Green Bay all the way.

PICK: Green Bay -10 (-105) at Bet99

Enjoy the games!
