NHL Picks: June 06

By Michael Spiegel

The Colorado Avalanche visit the Edmonton Oilers tonight with a commanding 3-0 series lead in the Western Conference Finals. The Avs are attempting to make it to the Cup Final for the first time in over 20 years, and with a win tonight, they’ll do just that.

In the NHL’s history, only four teams have come back from down 3-0 to win a series, and only two teams have done so in recent memory, more notably the LA Kings in 2014 who went on to win the Stanley Cup. While the Oilers have their back against the wall, and the odds are definitely not in their favour to win this series, never say never, especially when Connor McDavid is on your team.

Game 3 was the closest game of the series so far. After McDavid opened the scoring just under 40 seconds into the game, erupting the crowd in the process, the Avalanche remained calm and went on to take a 2-1 lead going into the third period. The Avalanche silenced the Edmonton crowd with an empty netter that put the game out of reach at 4-2 with under a minute to play.

Two key stars are out for game 4 tonight. Nazem Kadri for the Avs (who could be out for the rest of the playoffs) and the player who injured him, Evander Kane. Kane received a 5-minute major for boarding Kadri on Saturday night, and after a hearing with the Department of Player’s Safety, he has been issued a one-game suspension for the hit. Kadri has 14 points in these playoffs and Kane has 17 (13 goals). Both teams will feel their absences.

After recording a shutout in game 2, Pavel Francouz was able to shake off the early goal from McDavid and go on to save 27 of 29 to secure the win for the Avs. In the other net, Mike Smith stopped 39 of 42, however, he was outdueled by the Avalanche netminder. While Smith made some terrific stops, the few that did make it past him were relatively weak.

The last time the Oilers were on the brink of elimination were games 6 and 7 against Los Angeles. They went on to win both of those games and take the series. McDavid put up 5 points and Mike Smith stopped 59 of 61 over the course of those two games. With McDavid’s 30 points in 15 games these playoffs, I’m not betting against him when he’s up against it. As incredible as the Avalanche have been in this series, I think McDavid carries the Oilers through this one and forces this game back to Colorado.

Pick: Oilers – Money Line +116 (Sports Interaction)

Other notable bets:

Connor McDavid – Over 0.5 Goals +105 (Sports Interaction): The Oilers are going to be heavily leaning on McDavid tonight and he’s up to the task.

Connor McDavid – Over 4.5 SOG +125 (bet365): McDavid is going to be flying tonight, and even if he doesn’t score (which will be surprising if he doesn’t), he will be firing everything on net to try and beat Francouz like he did in game 3.

Zach Hyman – Over 0.5 Goals +175 (Sports Interaction): Hyman has been relatively quiet this series, only amassing 2 points in 3 games. I expect him to step his game up with the absence of Evander Kane’s goal scoring. With 9 goals in these playoffs already, I expect Hyman to get his 10th tonight.
