NHL Picks: May 27

By Mitchell Blair

Ummmmm, what the h-e double hockey sticks was that from the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday night? In giving you my pick for this game on Tuesday, I said Colorado should win and win with no problem taking them at -1.5. When the Avalanche led the game 3-0, I was feeling pretty confident about my wager. Yes, it is the playoffs when anything can happen, but to squander a 3-0 lead and then give up the lead again after Nathan McKinnon scored one of the best goals in Stanley Cup playoffs before losing in overtime makes me wonder just how Colorado could gas Game 5 could not once but twice. They actually should have won the game had Mikko Rantanen just shot the puck into the empty net until waiting to get to center where he was cut off by Justin Faulk with the potential series-clinching goal being squashed.

With Game 6 going in St. Louis, they have given the Blues all the momentum going in. The Avalanche are still favoured and they should be despite the Game 5 collapse. If they can come out, take control early and grab that momentum, they should be able to clamp it down this time having learned from their mistakes. I don’t think they win big unless they add a couple of empty netters to make the score look worse than it actually is, but I do think they avoid sending this series back to Denver for a Game 7 where they might just go in as the underdog. If Nathan McKinnon was focused in Game 5, one has to think he will have a further edge to his game in Game 6 as it was his effort which is what everyone should have been talking about instead of the Avalanche losing a game they should have won.
