MLS Pick: August 06

By Achyut Dixit

We are set for another action-packed MLS weekend with 13 games taking place on Saturday. The fight to get into playoff spots is getting intense as several major teams including LA Galaxy, Portland Timbers, and Atlanta United are lingering below the playoff line with less than two months of the regular season left.

Gerhard Struber’s NYRB will be on the road to face Wayne Rooney’s DC United. Both teams were served losses in midweek. The Red Bulls were involved in one of the games of the season as they were beaten at home by the Rapids by an extraordinary scoreline of 4-5. DC United were well beaten at the Bank of America stadium as Karol Swiderski starred for Charlotte.

Rooney’s first official match on 31st July gave some hope to the DC United fans as they scored twice in added time to complete a turnaround against Orlando. But it’s still looking very cloudy for the Black and Red. They sit at the bottom of the Eastern Conference and have only managed one win out of their last six league games. It’s hard to find any positives for DC at the moment but the signing of Ravel Morrison from Rooney’s former club, Derby County, is promising. The Jamaican has been able to instantly improve the team by showing authority and creativity in the middle of the park.

The Red Bulls would be hoping for a quiet night for Carlos Miguel as they have conceded seven goals in their last two league games. However, they would also fancy their chances against DC in what is expected to be an end-to-end game.  The New Jersey outfit is in a comfortable position on the table with six points separating them from Orlando at the 5th spot.

Frankie Amaya is expected to return to the starting eleven for Red Bulls after being rested against the Rapids. Skipper Tom Edwards will miss a second consecutive game for personal reasons, Andreas Reyes filled in for him in the last game, the 22-year-old Colombian was impressive in the first half but his levels dropped in the second 45 before being taken off with 20 minutes left to play.

Pick: DC United vs NY Red Bulls- NYRB to win +120 (Coolbet)
