EPL Picks: August 12

By Ryan Nadrajan

After a thrilling start to the campaign, the English Premier League is set to begin Week 2 on Saturday. Manchester City and Erling Haaland displayed why they are the favourites to win the title again while the odds on runner-ups Liverpool failed to walk away with a victory against Fulham. With 2 points dropped early in the season, expect Liverpool to have a strong showing at home when they host Crystal Palace at Anfield on Monday afternoon.

Things got a little dicey for Liverpool and their hopefuls last weekend at the Craven Cottage. Aleksandar Mitrovic put Fulham ahead 1-0 with a 32’ marker to secure the first half. Coming off the bench for his Premier League debut was the newly acquired Darwin Nunez in the 51st minute and not long after in the 64th minute he had his moment to silence his doubters and scored his first EPL goal to tie the game. After a bad tackle from Van Dijk, Fulham was awarded a penalty and Mitrovic made no mistake converting his second goal which made for a very impressive match for the Serbian. Liverpool had all the pressure and you could feel the tying goal was coming. In the 80th minute, it was none other than Mo Salah who got things tied for the Reds, poking one past Rodak. Liverpool came close to scoring the game-winner in 90+5’ when Jordan Henderson rang one of the crossbar, making them settle for a 2-2 draw.

Crystal Palace lost their season opener at home to Arsenal 2-0 and didn’t look very bright in the defeat. You could spot that the deficit in midfield caused by Conor Gallagher was hurting them. Arsenal came out the gate strong and applied heavy pressure in the first half, resulting in an early goal by Gabriel Martinelli. Palace had a few chances to equalize but goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale was sharp and denied any close comings. A late 85’ own goal by Marc Guehi sealed the loss for Palace as a hard shot from Bukayo Saka deflected off the defender and past the keeper.

Things won’t get any easier for the Crystal Palace front-line who were visually frustrated last weekend. They haven’t been able to beat Liverpool in 11 straight matches, blanking on 4/5 of the away meetings. Liverpool will certainly tighten things up defensively heading into this one and a clean sheet should be on board. If Palace does find the net it would most likely come from a penalty but after giving one up last week the Reds will be a little more cautious in the box.
