EPL 2022-23 Season Preview - July 12

By Ryan Nadrajan

We are just a little under a month away from the return of the English Premier League. Last season went down to the wire and was filled with excitement. We should be in for another thrilling campaign, as a lot of waves were made by teams in the summer transfer window trying to beef up their squads. With the market still open until September 1, expect some more noise to be made. The most notable signing, Erling Haaland will join back-to-back defending champs Manchester City who is aiming for their third straight title. The soon to be 22-year-old is currently the favorite for the golden boot at +333 (Betway). Liverpool has brought aboard Uruguayan footballer Darwin Nunez hoping that will tighten the gap with their rivals. With Mo Salah coming off a fresh new contract extension, the Reds will indeed be in contention again. Aside from the prominent two horses, here are three other teams I will be tailing this season:

Tottenham - They have put the league on notice with the moves they have made and should not be taken lightly. I believe they will be in the title hunt along with Manchester City and Liverpool for most of the season.  Antonio Conte is one of the best managers in the world and knows how to get the job done. He already has Harry Kane, who I think will return to form and challenge for the golden boot (+650), and last season’s winner Son Heung-min. Now joining them are Richarlison, Yves Bissouma, and Ivan Perisic. The attack on paper is most certainly terrifying, now we just need to see if Conte can get them to that next level. Anything short of a top-4 finish would be a huge disappointment.

Arsenal - Speaking of disappointments, Arsenal and their fans know that word too well. After a horrible start last season, the Gunners almost played their way to Champions League action, missing out by three points and warranting a fifth-place finish. This year I expect them to finish in the top 6, but then again this is Arsenal we’re talking about. Mike Arteta will need to lead them to some sort of consistency. They have a young squad with Saka, Odegaard, Jesus, Smith Rowe, and Martinelli all under the age of 25. A very sneaky challenger for the golden boot is Gabriel Jesus (+1600) who will finally be the main man at his new club and won’t get lost in rotation as he did at Manchester City. A little tightening on the back end could result in Arsenal being one of the most profitable clubs to bet on this season.

Chelsea - I say this with a ton of favoritism. Chelsea is not going anywhere and will remain in the top 4. There is a lot of uncertainty regarding them with the new ownership. Much has been made about the direction of the club and see the team as a work in progress. Two lingering issues that need to be addressed are filling the holes left behind on defense with the departures of Rudiger and Christensen, and also finding a number one striker. I don’t believe there is a need to panic for the situation to sort out. Kante was injured for a good portion of the season last year and Chelsea still managed to remain a top-three defensive team. Having him back will help the club tremendously on the back end. As far as offense goes, the addition of Raheem Sterling is massive. With Mount, Havertz, Kovacic, and someone I believe is still yet to be unlocked in Werner, this core group can be led by Tuchel for more success. The early season strength of schedule is light for Chelsea, so bettors should take advantage.

*Check back in later this week to see three teams I will be avoiding this upcoming season*
