EPL 2022-23 Season Preview - July 16

By Ryan Nadrajan

Earlier this week I gave out the three teams that I am looking forward to tailing the most this upcoming Premier League season. Manchester City and Liverpool are the obvious choices, but there will be more value going with Tottenham, Arsenal, and Chelsea. Today I will share the three teams that I will be avoiding the most during the campaign. The newly promoted Nottingham Forest, Bournemouth, and Fulham will be exempt from the list.

Leeds - After being promoted to the Premier League in the 20-21 season, Leeds exceeded expectations and had a decent 9th place finish in the season. A similar season was forecasted last year, but the club under-performed and survived relegation by a mere 3 points. Now heading into their third season since being promoted, it seems all but likely that the club will be hanging on desperately to remain. They had the third worst goal differential last season with -37. Losing defensive midfielder Kalvin Phillips will hurt them, but the biggest blow is losing Raphina who completed a move to Barcelona. Patrick Bamford is the best player remaining on the squad and is battling a foot injury with an unknown return date. If he isn’t ready for opening weekend and or the first few matches, Leeds could see their season slip away very quickly.

Southampton - A bottom 8 finish is warranted for Southampton. With no significant moves made to improve the club, they are keen on running it back with the same squad. Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl will be on a short leash and is the second leading manager to be sacked first according to bookmakers (+500) behind Leeds manager Alan Marsch (+350). You can find these markets available at BetVictor. The team will have its moments like they appear to do every season when they pull off an upset or two but I will not count on them to be a competitive side this season. It’s an all-around fade season for me.

Manchester United - I feel bad for Ronaldo. He doesn’t deserve to be in this mess of a club. When he arrived on the scene he expected Champions League level play and the club hasn’t delivered that. Since his return, United have been winless when he is not in the squad so no one can point their fingers back at the GOAT. The biggest loss for the club heading into the season will be the underappreciated Paul Pogba who is now donning the Juventus uniform. Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani who both expressed their unhappiness with the team are also without contracts. Mason Greenwood is still suspended and by the looks of it, he’s not coming back anytime soon. Newcomer Christian Eriksen provides a little light in the tunnel but it won’t be much. Don’t get me wrong, United will still be a challenging team but there will be those weeks like always when they don’t get the job done against middling competition. United fans are hoping they get Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho to have breakthrough seasons and it is not of the realm of possibility that they do. For me, it will still be a red flag when it comes to United. Free Ronaldo.
