EPL 2022-23 Golden Boot Preview - July 19
The Golden Boot race for the upcoming Premier League season might be the most competitive in recent memory. Last season it went down to the final week to crown both Mo Salah and Son Heung-min as the recipients with 23 goals a piece. Let’s take a look at who’s expected to be in the running and some long shots who could make a case. Odds courtesy via Betway
Erling Haaland +275 - No surprise here as the oddsmakers see the Norwegian striker as the favourite. Pep Guardiola hasn’t had a number one forward since he had the services of Sergio Aguero. Now with Haaland arriving, Manchester City remains the favourite to lift the league trophy for a third straight campaign. I believe Haaland will notch at least 20 goals in his first season in England. Kevin De Bruyne is probably licking his chops at the moment knowing he has someone with the IQ and finishing ability of Haaland, which should put him at the top of the league for assists. My only concern is if Pep starts doing his usual minute restrictions for quality players leading up to Champions League play that it could slow down the goal-scoring pace. The 21-year-old has also had a history of injuries, and make no mistake that they will not play him even if he is a tad bit hurt. His country did not qualify for the World Cup in Qatar, making the league his main and only focus.
Mo Salah +450 - Looking for his fourth Golden Boot is Mo Salah. He is on duty to take penalties and with the havoc Liverpool can create, he should have his fair share of opportunities. It seems like every year people are quick to count out Salah but in the end the Egyptian international always prevails. He will lose an important player on the attack as Sadio Mane has departed for Bayern Munich. He still has Diego Jota and newly acquired Darwin Nunez by his side to ensure the offense remains potent. With Trent Alexander-Arnold seemingly finding ways to get his crosses to his teammates, the forward trio should be able to pile up a bunch of goals. I think because Darwin Nunez is now on the team he may take away some of the goals that Mo Salah would pot. It will be interesting to see which of the two forwards will be the goal leader for Liverpool at the end of the season.
Harry Kane +550 - Rounding out the top-three favourites is another three-time winner in Tottenham’s Harry Kane. Last season we didn’t get the prolific goal-scoring from Kane as we have been accustomed to as he netted 17 goals in 37 games. The main reason for that is his partner in crime Son-Heung-min had himself a career season and was the one who was finding the back of the net. The Spurs have added Richarlison to help the duo and that move will help increase the number of goals expected this season. Kane will still be the man called upon to take spot kicks as he hasn’t missed one in four years, a remarkable stat to say the least. I think this Tottenham team is going to give defenders loads of trouble and we should see Kane have a bounce-back year. Out of Haaland, Salah, and Kane, I am leaning towards Kane to get his fourth Golden Boot.
There are couple more players that I will be sprinkling as dark horses:
Darwin Nunez +1400 - At only 23 years of age, Nunez tore apart the Primeira League in Portugal with 26 goals in 28 games. He should get plenty of service with all the talent alongside him at Liverpool.
Gabriel Jesus +1600 - Out of all of the long shots, this is the one that I think will do the best. I expect a top 5 finish in goals. He will finally get the minutes to be the main man up front. Arsenal losing Lacazette means that Jesus will get to play almost every game. He and Saka can do bits and become a new duo to do damage.
Raheem Sterling +3300 - Highly unlikely but you just never know how it may pan out at Chelsea.
Timo Werner +5000 - I think he will score more than Sterling as long as he gets the minutes. Timo is still young and is very speedy. I believe he has his biggest year this season and leads the club in goals.
