UEFA Nations League Picks: June 11

By Ryan Nadrajan

Sunday marks the start of Matchday 4 of the UEFA Nations League. The Matchday will go on throughout Tuesday after which the action will take a brief pause until Matchday 5, which is set to take off in late September.

Dominating Group C4 is Georgia which will welcome Bulgaria as their visitors at the Boris Paichadze Dinamo Arena in Tbilisi. Georgia has been scoring goals relatively easy up until this point in the tournament. Having scored 12 goals in three contests, they should have little trouble securing the full three points tomorrow.

Bulgaria will be looking to put in a strenuous effort after a very poor start to the tournament. With two draws and one loss, the Bulgarians find themselves winless in their last seven games in all competitions. Since 2016 they have only won one away game, coming in 2018 against Slovenia. The road woes seem almost more than likely to continue against a very much improved Georgia side.

5-2 was the final when the two teams faced each other last Sunday. Bulgaria did control the possession (60%) but it was Georgia who was able to manage to get more shots on target (7) with both teams having upwards of 15 shot attempts. The Bulgarians dug themselves into a big hole, one which they could not climb out of after an own goal (31’) and taking a costly penalty (58’).  In the 69th minute midfield substitute Valeri Qazaishvili scored the fifth goal within two minutes of entering the game for the Georgians, putting a stamp on the victory. Things could have gotten worse for the Bulgarians, as they survived conceding a 6th goal in stoppage time when Georgia failed to convert on their second penalty kick of the game.

It’s almost a no-brainer to side with Georgia here after their first encounter. Being the home team this time around they should be able to duplicate the result especially given the unsuccessful away game history for Bulgaria. I am surprised Georgia isn’t a much heavier favourite here.
