MLS Picks: June 30

By Achyut Dixit

The midweek MLS action continues as Charlotte hosts Austin FC and Atlanta United travel to New Jersey to face the NY Red Bulls.

The Red Bulls currently sit at 4th in the Eastern Conference, and are coming off 2-0 away loss to the Supporters Shield leaders, LAFC. The Red Bulls are unbeaten at home in their last 7 competitions and have won their last four games in the Red Bull Arena. They still face difficulties on the road as they have lost their last three away games, all with a score line of 2-0.

Health and safety protocols forced the Red Bulls to sideline Aaron Long, Luquinhas, and Jason Pendant on against LAFC. Andres Reyes was out with a foot injury and Lucas Monzon has not recovered from his pulled hamstring. It all added up to a very dull performance as Lewis Morgan started in the right wing-back role and the Red Bulls didn’t look like themselves without pressing high up the pitch.

Omir Fernandez and Patrick Klimala are the top creators for the Red Bulls with three assists each and Morgan leads the goalscoring chart with 7 goals.

Atlanta continues to struggle to get a grip on their season. Good times looked to be back when they beat Miami 2-0 at home on June 19th and Josef Martinez returned from injury and on to the scoresheet on the same night. But they travelled to Toronto last Weekend and extended their away winless streak to six games. That unwanted streak looks unlikely to be broken tonight as the Red Bulls are enjoying a good run at home themselves.

Atlanta are placed 11th in the Eastern Conference and sit five points behind the last playoff spot. Defending set pieces has been a major issue for Atlanta United. The Five Stripes also have a big injury list as Brooks Lennon, Osvaldo Alonso, Dylan Castanheira, and Miles Robinson are expected to sit out for the near future.

Atlanta have found the back of the net in all of their last 11 games. NY Red Bulls have scored at least 2 goals in their last 5 home games. The over 2.5 goals looks to be a good bet for this one.

Pick- NYRB vs Atlanta United: Over 2.75 goals -133 (Bet99)
