PREVIEW ATP Citi Open 2022: Aug 01

By Adam Ortega

The summer dog days are here, and that only means one thing, the U.S. Open tournament series is here to prepare us for one of the biggest grand slam tournaments of the year. Hot summer days and nights in Washington D.C. will host this week's ATP tournament. There should be plenty of recognizable names in this draw that should create an atmosphere of incredible tennis.

Instead of automatically talking about the top seed in the tournament, Andrey Rublev, let's get into some players I think might make some noise and go deep. A model of consistency and always a tough out is Australian Alex de Minaur. At 23 years old, nothing about de Minaur stands out. His physical stature, forehand, backhand, or serve are things that will not blow you out of the water. However, de Minaur is the model of consistency and will grind you down. Never having to worry about lack of effort is something I always want to put my money behind. Look for him to at least make it to the quarter-finals this week in Washington.

Another big name in the draw this coming week is Nick Kyrgios. Although he's ranked 47th in the world, he is a top ten talent. Coming off one of the best grand slam results at Wimbledon, Nick is looking to parlay that result into a nice hard court season leading up to the U.S Open. Oddly enough, after considering everything, Kyrgios's good results started recently after finding stability in his life. That stability comes in the form of his present girlfriend, Costeen Hatzi. With Kyrgios seeming to find consistency off the court, it has finally translated to great results on the court. Look for Kyrgios to have a big week should he be able to avoid any nasty on-court meltdowns.

Looking at the draw, several players can have a big week. I think that by baring an on-court drama or meltdowns, Nick Kyrgios can lift the trophy. His big serve and colossal ground game can lead him to another career title. Aside from looking to add some units to your bankroll, use this time to watch some player's that you usually don't see. Expanding player knowledge is key to handicapping tennis.

Have a great week, and good luck!
