PREVIEW WTA Western & Southern Open 2022:

By Adam Ortega

The lead-up events to the U.S. Open continue. This week we head to Cincinnati, Ohio, where the women take centre stage for the week. One of tennis's most important stories this past week is that Serena Williams is on her farewell tour. The U.S. Open will be the final tennis tournament she will play on the women's professional tour. William's dominance on the tennis court has lasted twenty-seven years. Regardless of the twenty-three grand slam singles titles she has to her name, new players are forging their pathway towards greatness.

As discussed in previous tennis events, the number one seed in this tournament is world number one, Iga Swiatek. She will be looking to add another title to her résumé in the lead-up to the U.S. Open. An exciting matchup looms if Sloan Stephens can get a win in her first match against Alize Cornet. Based on my experience following Stephens, she is either on or off. Should Stephens be playing to the best of her abilities in a possible matchup against Swiatek, expect Stephens to challenge the number one seed on the groundstrokes. Ultimately, expect a tough match with huge groundstrokes piercing the baseline.

Another player to keep your eye on in this tournament is. Coco Gauff. At eighteen years old, she is starting to come into her own and forging her pathway to success. As Serena Williams makes her final exit at the upcoming U.S. Open, I see no better player and person than Gauff to step into the role of being one of tennis's next superstars. Most recently, one of Gauff's better results came at the French Open. Although she did not hoist the trophy at the end, she did make it to the finals. Expect to see her in more grand slam finals; one day, she will call herself a grand slam champion.

As Serena's reign of dominance is ending, there is much more parity in the women's game. Although Swiatek does have a firm grip on the number one ranking, anyone can win any tournament on any given week. One player to look out for is former grand slam champion Simona Halep. Already into the finals of Toronto's event this past week, look for Halep and her coach Patrick Mouratoglou to make a deep run in Cincinnati.
