U.S. Open Tennis Women's Tournament Preview

By Adam Oretga

Mon, August 29, 2022, through Sun, September 11, 2022

The U.S. Open commences for the women in New York City in what is sure to provide great matches and drama. If you think you have an idea who can win this year's title, you are greatly mistaken. This year's field is wide open as Serena Williams's career dominance winds down. Not only is her dominance coming to a close, but this is Serena's last tournament as a professional. Does Serena have one last remarkable run at one of the year's biggest tournaments?

Let's face it, the women's game is about as open as I can remember. As previously noted, this year's tournament has many possible outcomes. Here are a few players to keep your eye on as we embark on this two-week fortnight.

We start with Serena Williams, who is gracefully heading towards retirement. She begins her campaign against world number eighty Danka Kovinic. Although Serena currently sits as a heavy favorite, I think this match is a bit more complicated than the odds indicate. Lack of on-court time and matches played would be why Serena could find an early exit. She can possibly make the second week if she can get through the first round of jitters.

Simona Halep is a player who has had a late-career resurgence. One of the best decisions Halep could have made for her career is teaming up with Serena William's most recent former coach Patrick Mouratoglou. Working together, Halep seems to have found her game just at the right moment. One of the only players standing between Halep and another grand slam is world number one, Iga Swiatek.

As mentioned, the young world number one player, Iga Swiatek, has to be viewed as having the best chance to win this grand slam. However, Swiatek is not invincible on hard courts as she is on the clay courts. Under the right circumstances, especially during night sessions at the U.S. Open, anything can happen.

Another name to keep an eye on is Coco Gauff. Gauff has had excellent results in grand slams. However, she is yet to hoist a grand slam trophy over her head. Could this be the year of Coco?

Finally, do not forget about last year's champion Emma Radacanu who came out of the qualifiers to stun the world and take home the trophy in New York. Success can be great, but it can also stunt your growth. Radacanu had multiple coaching changes immediately after her grand slam win last year. It hasn't produced the results she wanted and comes into this tournament on very shaky ground.
